“The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a long-acting version of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium).
A study of more than 1,000 patients showed that Nexium reduced the likelihood of hospitalization and increased overall survival in patients taking it. The drug’s label for PPIs includes an additional warning for stomach bleeding caused by stomach ulcers and other serious conditions.
In a, the FDA said it had found that patients taking Nexium had an increased risk of developing stomach bleeding.
“This finding underscores the importance of patient-specific data,” said FDA spokesman John Smith. “This drug’s label should be updated, and the FDA must approve the drug for use.”
The FDA said the drug’s label is designed to warn of serious side effects associated with PPIs such as an increased risk of bleeding, heart attack and stroke, among others. The agency also has added the warning to the drug’s label to alert patients of other risks.
According to, Nexium is approved for use by adults between 18 and 65 years old who have suffered gastrointestinal bleeding.
Patients taking Nexium can take the drug long-term to reduce stomach acid. It’s also prescribed in combination with other PPI drugs to prevent heartburn.
The drug is not for everyone. For instance, patients with severe kidney or liver disease and people who have chronic ulcerative colitis, a type of stomach ulcer caused by an excess of acid in the stomach, or those taking certain drugs that reduce stomach acid, may take the drug.
Nexium is available over the counter without a prescription in Canada. It is also available in the U. without a prescription in some provinces.
The drug was first approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in 1997. It was later approved for use in Canada, in Europe and in the United Kingdom.

Karpin, a gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto’s College of General Medicine, said the findings of the clinical trial and the Nexium study are consistent with previous research showing that PPIs can help to prevent heartburn.
