AstraZeneca’s sales of Nexium in the US have been cut by about half to just over $10 billion over the last few years. The company’s sales of the drug, an acid-free, high-flux, high-energy drug, are estimated at about $20 billion and is expected to make up the next $15 billion of net sales.
“We are very pleased that our revenues are up by about $10 billion,” said John Smith, vice president of business development and global strategy at AstraZeneca.
The company has also cut its sales of Nexium from $20 to $3 billion over the last six months. The drug was once marketed under the brand name Prevacid.
Nexium has generated $1.3 billion in US sales, more than double what AstraZeneca’s sales were on the year prior.
The price of the drug, which is sold under the brand name Nexium, was $1.50 per dose in the US in July 2022. AstraZeneca did not release its price of Nexium for the month ended 31 March 2022.
The company reported that the price of Nexium has fallen from $3.75 per dose in July 2023 to $2.50 in March 2024. It is anticipated that the price of the drug will fall further as the cost of the drug is likely to increase.

Smith said the company “will continue to maintain an active and productive relations with our customers,” including the US. Smith added: “We are happy that we have cut costs in the US by keeping our business open.”
AstraZeneca has been in talks with the US and Canada over the cost of Nexium from AstraZeneca, but it is not clear yet whether the drug will be available to customers outside the United States.
Nexium is a generic version of AstraZeneca’s acid-free, high-energy drug, Prilosec®. The drug was first approved in the US in 2001.
In August 2023, AstraZeneca sold the generic Prilosec rights to Nexium. A number of other generic versions are also sold by AstraZeneca.
In November 2023, AstraZeneca sold the Prilosec rights to a different brand name, Nexium. AstraZeneca also sold Nexium for $1.4 billion to a Canadian generic manufacturer in January 2024, and the drug was approved for sale in the US by the Federal Drug Administration on 25 March 2023.

Nexium 24HR can help to manage symptoms of heartburn and provide relief from heartburn and symptoms of the reflux/heartburn disorder. It is important to continue taking Nexium 24HR even after the symptoms of the reflux/heartburn resolve.
